Training: SIA CP Licence To Practise Training & Qualification Courses

Introduction

From 20th March 2006 it became a criminal offence for Close Protection Operatives (CPOs) to work within England and Wales without a Security Industry Authority (SIA) licence. Regulation has since been extended to the rest of the UK and many risk management companies employing CPOs overseas, such as Iraq and Afghanistan, also insist on an SIA licence as a basic requirement.

The SIA Specification for Core Competency Training & Qualifications dictates a minimum of 150 guided learning hours, plus an acceptable qualification in medical first aid (minimum of First Aid at Work). There are special exemptions and accreditation for prior learning. CPOs currently working on the circuit that can satisfy the criteria laid down by the SIA have two fast-track options i.e Assessment Only and 24 hour refresher and assessment.

Protective Security Course

The 4-week Protective Security Course has been specifically designed to meet the needs of the private sector. It takes into account all the requirements of mandatory licensing by the SIA, including first aid training.

Emphasis is placed on essential knowledge and skills required of today's commercial Close Protection Officer. Relevant theory is delivered, supported by handouts and the latest audio visual aids. Knowledge gained is applied in practical terms, by the use of role play and realistic scenarios.

Written examinations and tutor assessment is carried out at various stages and the course culminates in a final exercise. On completion, students are graded and given a course report. The SIA licence examination is also taken during the final week. This is externally marked and results notified in the form of a certificate. Details are also electronically up-loaded to the SIA.

SIA Licence Fast Track Option 1 - Assessment Only

Individuals who have completed formal CP training since 1st January 2002, as listed on the SIA website and have remained in an operational CP role, will be exempt from further training but will be required to take the knowledge test and a practical skills assessment.

Training exemptions currently listed are the RMP CP Course, 22-SAS BG Course, Metropolitan Police Royalty Protection / Special Branch CP Course, Police National CP Courses (including NI), Phoenix CP Ltd CP Course and The Nemesis Group Ltd Protective Security Course.

Examination papers are externally marked by the awarding body (BCUC) and results notified in the form of a certificate. Details of those that successfully pass the examination will also be electronically up-loaded to the SIA. Candidates that fail the exam will be required to attend a Refresher & Assessment Course (Option2) or a full 4-week approved course (less medical if appropriate).

Individuals not familiar with current terminology or require updating in respect of the mandatory requirements are advised to choose Option 2 in the first instance.

SIA Licence Fast Track Option 2 - Refresher & Assessment

For individuals with acceptable and checkable commercial, Police or military close protection training that have subsequently been in continuous CP employment. The SIA specify a minimum of 24 guided learning hours leading to formal assessment of CP knowledge and skills, including a written examination as in Option 1. This is an intensive 3-day course. Those that fail the examination will be required to attend a full 4-week approved course (less medical if appropriate).

Candidates must present sufficient evidence of prior learning and experience, with enough information on content to carryout a mapping exercise against the SIA Close Protection Specification for Training & Qualifications. An appeal system is in operation for those who dispute decisions on accreditation for prior learning.

Those with acceptable and checkable training must present sufficient evidence of prior learning and experience, with enough information on content to carryout a mapping exercise against the SIA Close Protection Specification for Training & Qualifications.
